These are the North Dakota English and Language Arts Content and Achievement Standards. A more complete reading may be found at www.dpi.state.nd.us The Standard is listed and the curriculum that is covered in the classroom is stated.

Standard One – Engage in the research process.

-Students will be researching, organizing, writing, and presenting a research paper. Example:(Who and why would you choose a specific person to be added to Mt. Rushmore.) or topics will be chosen and approved by the teacher.

Standard Two – Engage in the reading process.

-Students will be exposed and learn fifty-six literary terms that are related to the reading process.

-Students will read a novel, short stories, a play, and poetry.

Standard Three – Engage in the writing process.

– Students will write paragraphs, essays, directions, letters, and a research paper.

– Students will be exposed to journal writing.

– Students will also write outlines, persuasive composition, descriptive paragraph, and poetry.

Standard Four – Engage in the speaking and listening process.

– Students will present at least three oral projects throughout the year.

– Students will present a project with visual aides using power point, or SWAY. This must be presented with a prepared outline, note cards  or manuscript format.

Standard Five – Students understand media.

– Students will list and explore the various types of media.

– Students will read a novel and compare and contrast the work to its movie version.

– Students will analyze various types of media.

Standard Six – Understand and use principle language.

– Students will be exposed and learn the meanings of fifteen related terms.

– Students will work with verb tense, agreement, and punctuation.

– Students will learn literary techniques and terms.

– Students will be exposed to a semester of prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

The Accelerator Reader is a program that requests a student to read a book and then take a computerized test pertaining to the content. The grade of the test will count as a test grade and is required once every quarter.

Requirements

1. Book must be your individual reading level.

2. One book must be read and tested every quarter.

3. Mrs. Rivinius will record the score by the end of the quarter.

4. A zero will be earned if you choose not to complete the assignment and will be recorded in Power School.
